The Right Developer Tools
In any profession, the right tools in the right hands can make a big difference. Market-size issues aside, one of the most important features of an OS from a developer's point of view is the variety and quality of the development tools available. Compilers and debuggers are the most obvious examples of these tools, but other examples include code checkers (to ensure that code is free from the subtle errors that the compiler might not catch), cross-reference generators (to see which functions reference other functions and variables), performance analysers, and so on.
GNU – Compilers
Open Source compliers are available for both Solaris and AIX. Solaris ships with the GNU C compiler, gcc, and its companion source-level debugger, gdb. The Solaris OS also ships with the very powerful modular debugger, mdb. However, mdb is not a source-level debugger. It is most useful when we are debugging kernel code, or performing post-mortem analysis on programs for which the source is not available.
C/C++ Compilers
Acardia recommends Studio 12 for Solaris and IBM XL C and C++ compilers for AIX. With the experience gained from working with 900 ISV’s, we have found that these compilers produce better (that is, faster) code than that generated by gcc. IBM and Oracle understand how to optimise for both the Power and SPARC architecture, so their compilers should be used if at all possible. However to ensure code is portable between compilers, we also recommend that you should test that it compiles cleanly at the maximum warning level with both gcc and Studio / XL C compiler, before using the latter for the final production build.
