Lotus Enterprise Integrator for Domino

Features and benefits

IBM Lotus Enterprise Integrator for Domino is an enterprise application integration and server-based data access tool that provides industrial strength, real-time data access, bidirectional data movement, exchange, transformation, and synchronization among a wide range of applications and data sources supported by Lotus Connectors. These data sources include Lotus Domino, IBM DB2 Universal Database, Oracle, SAP, Sybase, Microsoft SQL Server, file system, text, and Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) data sources.

Lotus Enterprise Integrator can easily and seamlessly perform enterprise-scale interactions in real time, on a scheduled or event-driven basis, on a one-time basis, or simply on demand. The point-and-click user interface helps to ease an otherwise complex and daunting integration project.

Features

Lotus Enterprise Integrator consists of three components:

Lotus Enterprise Integrator for Domino
  • A Lotus Domino application called the Lotus Enterprise Integrator administrator database. This application is used to easily create special forms, called activities that define the criteria for integrating Lotus Domino and enterprise data. The Lotus Enterprise administrator database provides the point-and-click functionality needed used for application integration as well as the administration and management features that the name suggests.
  • The Lotus Enterprise Integrator server, which processes instructions, connects to external data sources and moves data according to conditions defined in the activity.
  • The Lotus Enterprise Integrator server log, which records data transfers and error messages. It operates on supported Lotus Domino server platforms and optionally runs as a Lotus Domino server add-in task.

There are two types of Lotus Enterprise Integrator activities: data management and real time.

  • Data management, or batch mode, facilitates one-way or bidirectional data transfer to keep data synchronized inconspicuously between two of the supported data sources on a scheduled or event-driven basis.
  • The real-time activities of Lotus Enterprise Integrator enable you to use applications built on Lotus Domino versions 6.0.3 and higher to access and manipulate dynamic enterprise data in real time in its native format, as though it were located on the Lotus Domino server, without modifying the application user interface.

Here is a list of available activities:

  • Virtual documents - Documents stored in enterprise systems appear to reside in Lotus Domino. To all requesters, virtual documents are transparently identical to native Lotus Domino data, eliminating the need to duplicate enterprise data in Lotus Domino.
  • Virtual attachments - A file in an external system looks and acts like a file attachment to a Lotus Domino document. This capability allows access to file attachments in external systems.
  • Virtual agents - Stored procedures or equivalent business logic defined in external systems are invoked from Lotus Domino just like Lotus Domino agents. The logic that drives your collaborative applications can be distributed and reused across enterprise systems, adding value to existing assets.
  • Virtual fields - A field in a Lotus Domino document with contents actually located in an external system, while a "key document" resides in Lotus Domino. Provides real time access to external systems using Lotus Connectors.
  • Integrated credentials - Enforces the security model of your enterprise data sources for access to virtual data objects. Provides flexible options for access controls, with minimal complexity for users.
  • Direct Transfer - Provides high performance, one way bulk transfer of data from one application to another. Great for leveraging existing data by moving to a more convenient or appropriate data store.
  • Archive - Similar to the Direct Transfer activity but it deletes records from the source, helping to reduce overhead for the originating application.
  • Replication - Allows synchronization of data between any two data stores supported by Lotus Connectors. Allows data to be kept in synch as business requirements dictate.
  • Polling - Allows Lotus Enterprise Integrator to poll for specific criteria, or on a timestamp, and then run another activity. This helps Lotus Enterprise Integrator activities run in a timely manner when business conditions change.
  • Scripted - Allows solutions to be developed that require greater business logic or data manipulation. Scripted activities execute LotusScript agents with Lotus Connector LotusScript Classes.
  • Administration - Allows the Lotus Enterprise Integrator administrator to manage and control data store backup and server log capacity. This helps Lotus Enterprise Integrator to run efficiently.

New feature enhancements

Virtual Fields key synchronization

Virtual fields activity keys can now be automatically synchronized on a periodic basis based on a background process.

Virtual Documents update event synchronization

Virtual Documents activities that are synchronizing update events in an external system can now do this when using external keys. With this functionality, all external events, (create, update and delete) can now use either the internal or external key approach for virtual documents.

Lotus Connector functionality

Lotus Connector automatically detects the external systems codepage where the RDBMS client supports it. This allows users to have a single Lotus Enterprise Integrator server talking to the different backend using different codepages for each connection. The RDBMS clients that support this are Oracle and SAP applications.

Lotus Enterprise Integrator 8 also has improved diagnostic capabilities.

Enhanced platform support

Lotus Enterprise Integrator 8 supports many popular platforms including:

  • Microsoft Windows 2003 Server and Server Enterprise Edition (32 bit and 64 bit)
  • IBM AIX 5.3
  • IBM i5/OS V5R4
  • Sun Solaris 10
  • RedHat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.0 (32 bit and 64 bit)
  • Novell SuSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10 (32 bit and 64 bit)

Note: Lotus Enterprise Integrator 8.0.1, as well as the connectors for IBM DB2 software, Oracle and Microsoft SQL server software, add support for running in 64-bit mode on Microsoft Windows 2003. Running Lotus Enterprise Integrator 8.0.1 in 64-bit mode can help improve the efficiency and performance for memory intensive data transfer and synchronization activities.
