for Databases

Overview

Increase availability and performance of DB2, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and Informix

for Databases
  • Provides monitors with pre-set thresholds and automatic corrective actions for DB2, Informix, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases
  • Enables users to manage multiple databases across different platforms from a central console with single product and a consistent architecture
  • Supports a central repository for historical and real-time reporting that enables trend analysis data to better plan and predict resource utilization
  • Easily integrates into an end-to-end management solution

What's New for IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2?

IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2 builds on the robust monitoring capabilities of IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.1, providing improved ease of use, enhanced views, and tighter integration with other Tivoli products for better service management. The major enhancements of this release include:

  • Tivoli Enterprise Portal user authentication, via LDAP, to reduce implementation and administration work.
  • Introduction of Agent Builder that facilitates creation of custom monitors in a matter of minutes.
  • Improved performance and scalability.
  • Enhanced monitoring of System p AIX environments, including mapping of virtual resources to physical resources, created by the AIX development team.
  • Support of regular expressions for log file monitoring, using the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Universal Agent.
  • Better visualization with improved chart views, IBM Tivoli Monitoring infrastructure topology view enhancements, and support for a full-function browser within a workspace.
  • Common Event Viewer, which integrates IBM Tivoli Monitoring, IBM Tivoli Enterprise.
  • Console, and IBM Tivoli Netcool OMNIbus events into a single console.
  • Tools to help automate the migration of IBM Tivoli Monitoring V5 resource models to IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2 situations.

IBM raises the bar for monitoring the leading databases with the addition of Sybase to our Tivoli Monitoring for Databases solutions. By leveraging extensive research to identify common problems and weaknesses found in the databases we monitor, we have created a set of "problem signatures," a combination of metrics and thresholds that trigger Tivoli's identify, notify, and cure problem prevention mechanism. This technology allows IBM to provide a superior and robust management system.

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases consists of five features (which are also known as Proactive Analysis Components) that are designed to help users ensure the availability and optimal performance of Oracle, IBM DB2, Microsoft SQL Server, IBM Informix servers, and most recently, Sybase. The use of these features can help to eliminate the typical Database Administrator (DBA) dilemma of determining what to monitor, when to monitor, and how to interpret and act upon the monitor results, leaving more time for the DBA to focus on more complex and less repetitive tasks. The primary objective is to provide routine, consistent monitoring and to anticipate and correct problems before database performance and customer confidence is degraded

All data captured by the monitors is delivered through an intuitive user interface and made available through historical and real-time reports. Each of the Proactive Analysis Components provides an "out-of-the-box" set of monitors (best practices) for quick deployment and activation. Custom monitors, thresholds, and tasks can also be defined, by the DBA, based on the best practices provided with the product.

With the availability of the new Sybase PAC, the IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Databases product now provides performance and availability monitoring for leading relational database management system software on the market today. The Sybase PAC leverages the IBM Tivoli Monitoring technology to provide intelligent monitoring (via resource models) of a Sybase ASE database/server (V12.5.0.3 or V12.5.1). It provides monitoring of key system status and resources as well as basic administrative tasks (start/stop server processes) that can be invoked automatically using IBM Tivoli Monitoring*, IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console*, or IBM Tivoli Business System Manager*. The PAC supports the endpoint, server-gateway architecture and major O/S platforms (UNIX, Linux, and Windows) and integrates with IBM Tivoli Enterprise Console for event management, IBM Tivoli Warehouse for historical reporting, the IBM Tivoli Monitoring Web Health Console for real-time status reporting, and IBM Tivoli Business Systems Manager for a line-of-business view of component and resource health.
