IBM ILOG JViews Maps for Defense

Features and benefits

Build custom map displays for command and control applications

IBM ILOG JViews Maps for Defense enables Java developers to build custom military mapping applications. It extends the underlying IBM ILOG JViews Maps product, adding features to meet the specialized needs of military command and control applications, including military map readers and symbol sets, terrain analysis, and 3D map visualization.

Includes IBM ILOG JViews Maps

JViews Maps for Defense is built on top of the more generic IBM ILOG JViews Maps product, and provides access to all features of the product.

Benefit: JViews Maps for Defense leverages the power of the base product, while delivering domain-specific functionality for military applications.

Military map readers

In addition to the many map data formats supported by JViews Maps, JViews Maps for Defense also imports military map data from the following formats: S57, S52, DAFIF, NGA/NIMA VPF/VMAP 0, 1 & 2, ASRP, USRP and CADRG. These cover a wide variety of the land, air, and naval formats used worldwide.

Benefit: Developers have out-of-the-box support for the most popular military map formats, saving development effort and time.

Prebuilt military symbol sets

JViews Maps for Defense also supports standard military symbol sets and comes with prebuilt graphic objects to represent NATO APP-6a/MIL STD 2525B symbols.

Benefit: Developers can quickly create map applications, using the provided standardized graphics.

Terrain analysis

JViews Maps for Defense also includes the following 2D terrain analysis features (all fully extensible):

  • Area of visibility
  • Line of sight
  • Multi-segment terrain cut
  • Terrain gradient computation
  • Terrain elevated areas and valleys computation
  • Sun and shading

Benefit: These visualization services, often used in military mission planning and analysis applications, are immediately available to developers.

3D map visualization

JViews Maps for Defense can also render map terrain displays in 3D. Overlaid map symbols and custom 3D objects, such as domes and corridors, are automatically displayed in a 3D space (latitude, longitude and elevation)

The 3D displays are highly optimized, using advanced techniques that include adaptive terrain refinement and OpenGL-based hardware acceleration. Prebuilt user interactions are provided for manipulating the viewing angle and depicting aerial fly-throughs.

Benefit: IBM ILOG JViews Maps for Defense hides the intricacy of 3D mapping, enabling developers to build 3D maps without 3D display expertise.
