As much as 90% of new data is unstructured, coming from social media, electronic documents, machine data etc., and growing at rates as high as 50% per year. This is big data.

As a result organisations are looking at ways to store and sort this unstructured data. Hadoop in considered the leading application, but how do you get up and running quickly. Well Oracle and IBM are now throwing their considerable experience behind two solutions to get you up and running quickly while delivering Enterprise Class support to an Open Source software stack.

IBM’s offering is based on their very powerful Power8 processor. IBM are claiming :

  1. Power Systems are proven to be more reliable with 73% fewer outages and 92% fewer performance problems than x86.
  2. POWER8 delivers 2.5x performance on Big Data/Hadoop compared to the best x86 published result.

Oracle’s solution is a pre-built and tested – Big Data Appliance.  This is a rack of 18 Servers installed into an Oracle Rack – with all testing and performance tuning carried-out in an Oracle Lab prior to shipping to the customer site.  As the software is pre-installed a single support contact covers all the hardware, configuration, OS, and most importantly – Hadoop .  This in turn delivers “Lower TCO and Faster Time to Value”
