Oracle OpenWorld 2014 Keynote – Larry Ellison Demonstrates Oracle Cloud

Oracle Executive Chairman and CTO Larry Ellison emphasized ease of use and cost advantages for customers during his keynote presentation on Tuesday at Oracle OpenWorld 2014. Ellison said new capabilities introduced by Oracle in 2014 enable customers to easily move their on-premises databases and applications to Oracle Cloud, helping them achieve higher performance at lower costs.

He also said that because Oracle builds its software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications using the same standards-based cloud platform that it provides customers, customers can easily build extensions to those applications. And because Oracle SaaS applications and customer extensions are both built on the same platform, they provide a common experience and are automatically endowed with new mobile, analytic, and social capabilities inherent in the Oracle Cloud platform. “The applications that are built on top of that platform inherit those capabilities,” he said.

In addition to providing applications with more-modern characteristics that businesses need to compete more successfully, the automation provided by Oracle Cloud relieves customers from the burden of having to perform manual procedures that also sometimes result in costly human error. “Automation is a huge difference. When you move from on-premise or infrastructure as a service to platform as a service, your costs drop precipitously because Oracle’s so much easier to use,” he said.

The new “platform 2014” services represent an extension of Oracle’s brand from one of “extreme performance” to one that also encompasses “extreme ease of use” and “extreme low cost,” said Ellison.

He noted that customers can lower their cost of running databases and applications in the cloud because Oracle automates everything from patching to backup and recovery.

“Extreme performance has always been a part of the Oracle brand. What has not always been a part of the Oracle brand is the notion of extreme ease of use and extreme low cost,” Ellison said. “You come to expect security, reliability, standards—those kinds of things—and extreme performance from Oracle, but a lot of people think, well, Oracle’s not famous for ease of use, Oracle’s not famous for being the low-cost provider.” The Oracle Cloud platform changes that, he said.

Ellison personally handled the live, on-stage demonstration, in which he showed how easy it was for customers to move an Oracle Database 12c database from an on-premises to cloud deployment and graphically displayed the query performance improvements enabled by the Oracle Database In-Memory option’s in-memory column format capabilities.

He also demonstrated how, because Oracle allows customers to build extensions using the same cloud platform Oracle uses, a retailer could build an extension to its Oracle Human Capital Management (Oracle HCM) application that looked as if it were part of the application itself. “We are the only cloud company that builds SaaS applications with this powerful, standards-based platform, and then makes the same exact platform available for you to make extensions to those applications,” he said.
