IBM updates Smarter Storage lineup with flash and tape-based systems

IBM has unveiled a new line of storage systems designed for high-performance computing and big data analytics operations

IBM has said that its FlashSystem line, first announced in April, would now be available to enterprise customers. Based entirely on flash memory hardware, the storage appliances have been designed for high-performance applications that require instant access to data.

Such memory technology has been considered to be a primary component in big data applications where rapid access to large data stores is needed to perform complex analytics.

Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president for IBM’s systems and technology, said: “Cloud computing and big data analytics are playing key roles in helping organisations lower operating expenses, improve efficiencies and increase productivity.

“But they’re also enabling greater and faster access to business insights, which is fundamentally transforming the ways in which organisations, public and private, are interacting with, learning from and supporting their customers.”

In addition to the FlashSystem update, IBM is updating its tape storage offerings. The company said that the Linear Tape File System Enterprise Edition would allow firms to integrate tape storage systems as a separate tier. In doing so, IBM believes that companies will be able to shift more storage to tape systems, potentially lowering storage costs.
