At the Barcelona Mobile World Congress, Oracle have announced an important technology to fight the inherent networking problems that are increasingly stopping or hindering Cloud computing.
Background
In the traditional server room we had the Ethernet switches for network traffic and the Fibre for SAN; two sets of switches and cables to every server. In Cloud computing everything is firstly shared (performance problems) and secondly virtual – which can mean complexity at the back-end software defined network layer when it talks to the connected hardware.
Oracle have long been a supporter of InfiniBand and use it extensively in their Exadata range and have embedded it in their new SPARC chips. However traditional InfiniBand was limited to 40Gb/s (still faster than fibre or copper) but not fast enough for the needs of true Cloud computing. Now Oracle have introduced the EDR InfiniBand Fabric. This runs at 100Gb/s and according to Oracle delivers 10x Performance Improvement in Cloud Network Infrastructure.
