Lotus Protector for Mail Security

Features and benefits

IBM Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.5 software helps protect your IBM Lotus Domino and mixed email infrastructure from spam, viruses and other threats originating on the Internet. Built with proven IBM Security Solutions content filtering technology, it helps optimize email throughput to help keep unwanted content out of your Lotus Domino infrastructure. And it maximizes the effectiveness of your email infrastructure by giving users personalized control of email received right within their IBM Lotus Notes inbox.

Benefits

Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.5 software can help your business:

  • Readily respond to evolving Internet-based threats and new regulatory policies as they are formulated.
  • Optimize messaging throughput with content filtering placed on the edge of the network instead on Lotus Domino servers.
  • Reduce training costs and minimize the expense of evaluating and discarding unwanted content by giving users personal control over the content they receive right within the Lotus Notes inbox.
  • Ensure optimal IT performance through a reduction in spam and viruses that are transported through the network.
  • Meet tight IT budgets with advanced technology that helps minimize the physical resources required to analyze and process incoming email.
  • Maintain control over business data and inappropriate content that could be sent to customers and partners via email.
  • Simplify software contract management by consolidating Lotus Domino email and virus and spam protection under a single vendor.

Features

Highlighted features delivered through Lotus Protector for Mail Security 2.5 software includes the following:

Spam and virus management

  • Shown to block over 99% of spam through independent testing
  • Approximately 500% increase in throughput performance over V2.1. Approximately 2000% hardware price performance increase over V2.1
  • Internet Protocol (IP) layer filtering that discards emails sent from IP addresses that are virtually certain to be spam, based on a number of factors that comprise the "reputation" of the senders' IP address.
  • New zero level analysis (ZLA) technology, innovated by IBM, helps optimize throughput and content filter efficiency. The ZLA module inspects streaming email in real time, minimizing the expensive task of writing content to disk, and discarding it at any point if it is determined to be spam.
  • Content filtering powered by IBM Internet Security Systems (ISS) X-Force research and development team vulnerability-based research. Updates from the IBM ISS Global Data Center are delivered many times per day to help you respond to changing spam tactics and threats.
  • Includes more than 20 analysis modules for custom scanning of email at many different levels to help meet legal, regulatory, and business policy compliance requirements - helping to control content that leaves your network.
  • Helps keep offensive and personal content out of email through predefined keyword searches and individual configurable keyword searches.
  • Helps protect against phishing attempts with an analysis module that helps guard employees against email that targets their personal information.
  • Helps detect malicious URLs through a URL filter module supported by a large URL filter database.
  • Inspects email attachments with a behavioral virus protection system that takes preemptive action against suspicious code even before it is publically known.
  • Supports global business scope with Unicode analysis, allowing for analysis of email content in a wide variety of character sets, including double-byte characters.

Flexible and easy to use

  • Integration with Lotus Notes 8.5.1 allows users to easily block unwanted content from selected senders, and managed blocked spam right within the inbox
  • Stand-alone, Web-based local management interface for easy access to security and anti-spam policies.
  • Easily create rules-based policies to enable custom spam filtering, defining who (sender/recipient), and (time frame), and which analysis modules to use, and one of more than 10 actions to take.
  • Clustering option for a robust scalability that requires no separate management console, easily allowing for the management of multiple servers through one appliance.
  • Standard, centralized reports available either on demand or according to a defined schedule help give valuable insights into the latest spam trends causing the biggest challenge to the email infrastructure.

Content validation and intrusion prevention

  • Optional automatic encryption of email via standards-based TLS protocol, performed at the edge of the network.
  • Helps save valuable bandwidth with recipient verification technology that confirms the existence of an email address at the simple mail transfer protocol (SMTP) connection.
  • Helps protect against 'zero-day' attacks, including denial-of-service and directory harvest attacks.

The effectiveness percentage and number of false positives are based on daily ICSA Labs anti-spam effectiveness testing conducted between August 2009 through April 2011. During that time, ICSA Labs sent over 14 million messages through Lotus Protector for Mail Security devices installed in ICSA Labs testing laboratories. Individual results may vary. Complete details are available in the set of ICSA Labs Monthly Anti-Spam Short Reports for the Lotus Protector for Mail Security solution.

As measured by filtering incoming Internet e-mails of average size with IP layer filters turned off. Internal optimizations, clustering enhancements, and an updated Linux operating system designed for greater performance and reliability contribute to this dramatic increase in performance. IP layer pre-filtering and ZLA filtering increase this throughput even more. With cost-effective IBM System x hardware, price performance -- as measured by the number of e-mails processed per hour against hardware investment -- has increased by 2,000%.
