WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime

Features and benefits

An essential component for modernizing and SOA enabling COBOL assets and extending them into WebSphere Application Server on AIX

WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime delivers technology to help reuse existing COBOL business applications by executing them natively within WebSphere application server. This helps in simplifying integration requirements and improving flexibility and productivity within the enterprise SOA infrastructure.

Tightly integrated managed environment to host Java EE and COBOL applications within WebSphere Application Server: WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime provides an execution environment for modern COBOL business applications within WebSphere Application Server, enabling simplified interoperability between Java EE and COBOL workloads. This enables developers to focus on business logic rather than on how to interoperate between Java EE and COBOL assets, failure detection, and recovery and access to data. It provides standard interfaces to invoke COBOL applications from Java and the extended transaction runtime will support a subset of the CICS APIs as well as support for Tuxedo APIs in the future. Java applications can connect through standard connection interfaces - Java connector architecture (JCA) or service component architecture (SCA) and invoke COBOL applications.

Unified System Administration WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime provides a common administration facility for managing both COBOL and Java EE assets within the WebSphere Application Server administrative console, reducing the learning curve for administration personnel and allowing them to easily and efficiently deploy, administer, and optimize services. It also provides the capability for user groups with predefined privileges to run certain administrative tasks thus reducing the dependence on administration personnel and improving their productivity

Problem determination and error handling across mixed language applications: WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime, enables COBOL Runtime Library and application errors to be propagated as Java exceptions back to Java EE applications for further processing, simplifying development and integration effort and increasing developer productivity

Managing data exchange across mixed language applications: Using WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime, mixed type data can be exchanged between COBOL and Java applications through the binding feature provided with IBM Rational Application Developer. Data can also be exchanged using COMMAREA in character format.

Data management using files and queues WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime provides support for CICS data management facilities such as files and queues stored in a DB2 database. It also allows VSAM style access to the data stored in DB2, apart from the preferred method using SQL API.

Application development and debugging Rational Development tools, along with WebSphere eXtended Transaction Runtime, provide a modern application development experience across Java EE and COBOL applications. They enable developers to perform operations such as develop, deploy, and debug applications within a single integrated development environment (IDE), improving productivity. They also enable COBOL program inspection from within a Java EE application
